This research originates from the way Q.S. al-Anfal verse 17 is understood and practiced by the community of Jorong Padang Candi, Nagari Sungai Dareh, Dharmasraya. The verse is actively “lived” within communal activities as a means of repelling misfortune (tolak bala), which is embodied in a long-standing cultural practice known as the Bakawu tradition. A deeper investigation shows that Q.S. al-Anfal verse 17 is culturally received and embedded into the Bakawu tradition through continuous transmission by religious scholars and local religious leaders. The verse is then transformed into a shared communal understanding that functions as spiritual protection against harm. This process is influenced by interpretations of the asbāb al-nuzūl of Q.S. al-Anfal verse 17, which provides contextual meanings and functional relevance for the community. This study employs a qualitative field research method using an anthropological approach and the theory of reception (respsi) by Ahmad Rafiq. Primary data were obtained through direct interviews with informants in the field, while secondary data were collected from books, journals, articles, and other relevant sources. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings show that the Bakawu tradition in Jorong Padang Candi, Nagari Sungai Dareh, is performed every Friday after the congregational prayer, beginning with communal meals followed by dhikr and prayers led by religious figures. The core ritual involves writing Q.S. al-Anfal verse 17 on young coconut leaves using the sulus calligraphic style, which are then placed at two corners of rice fields as a symbolic act of protection. The reception of the verse is categorized into three forms: exegetical reception, which interprets it as an effort to repel pests; aesthetic reception, which views it as a spiritually meaningful form of artistic expression; and functional reception, which has been transmitted from Syekh Abdurrauf Syingkil to Duli Datuak Mangku and is practiced as a ritual of protection (tolak bala) in agricultural fields.
